CCBC started its CDL program in January 2021. Students have the opportunity to earn a Commercial Driver’s Class-A License in a 280-hour training program that runs 8 – 20 weeks with day, evening and weekend options. A combination of in-class and behind-the-wheel instruction occurs at the college’s TradePoint Atlantic site. Upon completion, students are prepared to take the Maryland Commercial Driver’s License exam.
While the program at CCBC is fairly new, both sisters say that being in the program has been an amazing experience.
“This experience has been more than fun, it has been the highlight of my year. It has been my therapy and my peace. Parts of the class has been challenging but nothing has been too hard to overcome.” —Lachaye Dudley
Latisha admitted that she was nervous at first, but nothing would stop her. She surprised herself and her instructors when she managed to get her permit on her first try and mastered her pre-trip, an exam acknowledging one knows how to thoroughly inspect a vehicle, within a couple of days.
While women remain in the minority among U.S. truck drivers, at only 11 percent, neither sister is intimidated by that statistic. It actually motivates them more.
“I love being in this male dominated industry,” said Latisha. “My goal is to dominate in every aspect possible and show women that they can do this too.”
“I’ve always been someone who loves a challenge,” said Lachaye. “When someone tells me I can’t do something, it just motivates me to prove them wrong.”
When asked what they want to do after earning their license, they easily tell you it is all part of a well thought out plan to secure their future.
“My short-term goal is to work locally until my sister and I can make enough money to become owner operators and start our own trucking company,” said Latisha.
“I see a lot of opportunities opening up,” said Lachaye, “travel, investments, networking and more.” “Right now, we’re just happy to be getting our CDL license. Once it’s ours, we can do anything we want with it. It’s up to us. It means financial stability for our family.”
**Update: Both Latisha and Lachaye completed the CDL program in Dec. 2021.
