FAFSA: The key to a tuition-free degree

Many students are earning their degrees and certificates tuition-free, thanks to a mix of federal, state and private funding. The first critical step? Submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

If you’re unsure about the value of submitting the FAFSA each year, read on.

Q: Why is the FAFSA important?

A: The FAFSA determines eligibility for financial aid, including grants, scholarships, work-study and loans.

Q: Who should apply for the FAFSA?

A: “Anyone pursuing a degree should apply,” says Ginny Zawodny, CCBC’s senior director of Financial Aid. “Almost everyone qualifies for something, whether a Pell Grant, scholarship or payment plan.”

Many students are surprised by what they can receive.

“I finished the FAFSA and was awarded a full Pell Grant,” says CCBC student Roy L. “I definitely recommend filling it out."

Q: When should I apply for the FAFSA?

A: Submit a new FAFSA each year, as early as possible. Many aid programs, including grants and scholarships, are first-come, first-served. Even if you’re unsure about your plans, applying early ensures funding is available if you decide to enroll.
